Lampung

Description

Located at the southern tip of Sumatra, Lampung is often just a pass-through point for travelers heading to or from Java. But those who stop and explore find something else entirely: raw beaches, uncrowded surf breaks, dense jungles, and access to one of the most biologically rich regions in Southeast Asia. With strong cultural roots, thriving coffee plantations, and islands just off the coast, Lampung is ideal for adventurous travelers looking to go off-script.

Whether you’re chasing waves, wildlife, or remote coastal beauty, Lampung has plenty to offer—and almost no crowds.

Highlights

  • Way Kambas National Park: One of Indonesia’s oldest national parks, home to Sumatran elephants, endangered tigers, and rhinoceros conservation efforts. Visitors can explore the Elephant Conservation Center and take guided treks or boat trips.

  • Pahawang Island: A short boat ride from the mainland, this island is known for snorkeling, coral reefs, and calm turquoise waters—ideal for beginners and underwater photography.

  • Tanjung Setia Beach: One of Indonesia’s top surf spots, known for consistent swells and far fewer surfers than Bali or Java. Best visited between May and October.

  • Krakatoa Volcano (Anak Krakatau): Visible from Lampung’s west coast, this active volcanic island—born from the legendary 1883 eruption—is accessible via boat tours, often paired with camping or snorkeling nearby.

  • Traditional Culture & Coffee: Explore Lampungese traditions through dance, textiles, and local food, or visit coffee farms in the Liwa Highlands, where some of Sumatra’s best beans are grown.

Best Time to Visit

May to October is the dry season and the best time to explore Lampung’s beaches, islands, and national parks.

  • Dry Season (May–October): Ideal for outdoor activities, surfing, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, and hiking. Sea conditions are more stable, especially around Pahawang Island and Krakatoa. This is also peak time for surf at Tanjung Setia.

  • Wet Season (November–April): Rainfall increases, especially inland. Access to some natural areas may be limited, and boat trips could be delayed or canceled during storms. However, the forests are lush and the scenery is spectacular for those comfortable with the conditions.

Wildlife Tip: Visit Way Kambas early in the day for better chances to see elephants or birdlife. For those interested in conservation, arrange visits with park officials or NGOs in advance for deeper, more educational experiences.
